In Part 1 of this series, we discussed the origins of the first aid kit and six common mistakes we have found in the use of first aid kits.

Since Johnson & Johnson created the first kit some 136 years ago, we have seen the rise of organizations like the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement, which continues to promote and propagate first aid with its impressive workforce of over 16 million volunteers and 180,000 employees around the world.

Its Nigerian chapter was established in 1960 as the Nigeria Red Cross Society and currently runs in all 774 local governments with a volunteer strength of over 800,000.

Notwithstanding the above facts, we have realised that there is still a significant need for more first aid awareness and why every home and office needs a first aid kit.

This, in many ways, has informed this post and why we have provided six additional errors you should avoid with your first aid kit.

SIX FIRST AID KIT ERRORS TO AVOID

We have highlighted six ways to use a first-aid kit and six mistakes to avoid when using your kit at home or in the office.

7.  IGNORING SPECIAL NEEDS:

Where you fail to consider the specific medical needs of employees, such as allergies or chronic conditions and include items that some employees or family members may be allergic to, such as latex gloves or certain medications.

SOLUTION:

Ensure the first aid kit includes items to address these specific needs, such as EpiPens for severe allergies and additional medications or supplies as necessary beware of any allergies within your employee, family or group and select alternative products when necessary. For instance, use non-latex gloves and hypoallergenic tape.

  1. OVERLOOKING REGULAR MAINTENANCE:

Neglecting routine checks to maintain the first aid kit can lead to missing or depleted supplies and storing the kit in an inaccessible or inappropriate location, such as in a damp area where items can deteriorate.

SOLUTION:

Assign a responsible individual or team to inspect and maintain the first aid kits. Use a checklist to keep track of inventory to ensure everything is in working order. Store your first aid kit in a cool, dry place that is easily accessible. Ensure everyone in the household or workplace knows where it is located.

  1. POOR ORGANIZATION:

A disorganized first aid box can slow down response time during an emergency. Digging through a cluttered kit can be frustrating and time-consuming.

SOLUTION:

Logically organize your kit. Use labelled compartments or zip-lock bags to group similar items together. Ensure the most frequently used items are easily accessible.

  1. NOT RESTOCKING AFTER USE:

Forgetting to replace items after they’ve been used is a critical error. This can leave the kit underprepared for future emergencies.

SOLUTION:

After using any item from the first aid kit, immediately make a note to replace it. Keep a checklist inside the kit to track inventory and restock as necessary.

  1. NON-COMPLIANCE WITH REGULATIONS:

Not adhering to workplace or home safety regulations and standards for first aid kits.

SOLUTION:

Familiarize yourself with local and national regulations regarding workplace first aid requirements. Ensure your first aid kit complies with these standards to avoid legal issues and ensure employee or family member safety.

  1. IGNORING EMPLOYEE FEEDBACK:

Failing to take account of feedback from employees or family members about the contents and accessibility of the first aid kit.

SOLUTION:

Encourage employees to provide input on the first aid kit. Address any concerns or suggestions to improve its effectiveness and ensure it meets the needs of the workforce.

 CONCLUSION

The foregoing points highlight the importance of first aid kits in emergency and quick response situations.

In addition, regular checks, and customization of first aid kits is essential for employee and family member safety and regulatory compliance. By avoiding these common mistakes and taking proactive steps to ensure the kit is complete, accessible, and regularly maintained, businesses can enhance their preparedness for emergencies and create a safer work environment.

Regular training and consideration of specific workplace and home risks will further ensure that employees can respond effectively to injuries and health issues.
